Japan to partner Vibrant Gujarat


Gujarat’s biennial investment mela is truly going global. Breaking a seven-year jinx, Japan has become the first country to join hands with the state government for the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit to be held on January 12-13 next year. Japan’s interest in Gujarat stems from the fact that nearly 40 per cent of the proposed Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), which is being built with Japanese funding, falls in the state. The Japanese External Trade Organisation (JETRO) will be leading a delegation of 40-odd industrialists and officials of the ministry of international trade and industry (MITI). “Among the top names that have agreed to be here are Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyoto and Honda,” said a senior official. The proposal to make Japan a partner country was put forth before Japanese officials during managing director, GIDC, Maheshwar Sahu’s visit to Japan to canvass for Vibrant Gujarat. Among the issues to be discussed will be ‘Mini Japan’, an exclusive city meant for the Japanese to be located between Dholera and Fedra, where an international merchant airport has been planned. Investment in the ports sector and creating a chain of godowns along the DMIC, especially in Dholera special investment region (SIR), will be on the agenda. The United Kingdom was a partner country at the resurgent Gujarat partnership meet, which took place on February 8-9, 2002.
Gujarat plans the “BIGGEST” airport

The proposed international airport at Federa could well be the biggest in India. The Gujarat government has earmarked a massive 7,500 hectares of land, mostly wasteland, for the new airport at Fedra near Dholera special investment region (SIR). The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already cleared the site last month. Earlier, the state government had identified 1,700ha for the upcoming airport in Pachham-Valinda-Pipli stretch of Dhandhuka taluka. The new site falls under the influence of DMIC and is also close to three SIRs planned at Dholera, Sanand and Changodar. “The 1,700ha site notified for the project was not contiguous and had a large number of small land holdings. Hence, the new site has been shifted towards nearby fedra,” said a senior official. The land would be handed over to Gujarat Industrial Corridor Company Ltd, a nodal agency for Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). Though the government is planning to use 2,800ha initially, additional land has been earmarked for future expansion of the airport as well as other aviation activities. Two different runways are part of the first-phase development. “A third runway would also be added as the need arises,” the official said. There is also a plan to connect the present Sardar Patel International Airport to the new one near Dholera through metro rail network. The state government has also carried out technical feasibility report for the Ahmedabad-Wataman-Dholera-Bhavnagar expressway.
